Our very reliable Renault Scénic takes us in every corner of the Basque Country. We reached the symbolic 5000 KM point while exploring the Kingdom of Navarre. We’ve done close to 12 000 KM on the Basque Country Roads. We can’t believe how much mileage we’ve achieved just within the Basque Country. Here is a picture of our car in Navarre right in front of the nice village of Ujué and its magnificent fortified church. While Navarre makes up close to 50% of what is considered to be “Euskal Herria” (the Greater Basque Country), it has to be distinguished from other basque regions. Northern Navarre consists of several narrow gorges and valleys filled with dense forests and the majority of its population speaks the basque language. Southern Navarre consist of small hills and golden plains with a Mediterranean climate where most inhabitants speak Spanish. We enjoyed our discoveries in that region marked by the history of power struggles between the Kingdoms of Navarre, Spain and France.
